Biography

I was born in Concord, NC.  Later my family moved to Charlotte to give us musical opportunities available in their public schools. I am married to a disabled veteran who is also a native of Cabarrus County and graduated from Harrisburg. Together we moved back to Cabarrus County to raise our 5 children on a small farm.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Music, with minors in History and English. I was a member of the Charlotte Symphony for 11 years during which time I also participated in collaborations with the public schools in academics and the arts. I have also participated in string grant programs for Title I schools. In addition to this, I was adjunct faculty with Gardner-Webb University for over 25 years. I have done outreach programs in Gaston and Stanly counties and volunteered in the Hospice Interlude Music program. I am a volunteer in CCS classrooms and after-school clubs. I  continue to be a free-lance cellist and am well known in many area churches in Charlotte, Concord, and the surrounding areas.

Having received an excellent education in public school, my husband and I therefore decided to send our 2 oldest children to public school in Cabarrus County. They attended Harrisburg Elementary through 4th grade at which time we chose to homeschool all our children. Using textbook based curriculums, I taught my children 1st-12th grade until they entered early college at UNCC and RCCC. We utilized a self-pace, mastery approach. I emphasized the basic learning skills of reading, writing, math, comprehension, and reasoning. I believe these skills are important reasons they are contributing, productive, and independent adults. These skills also enabled them to be lifelong learners beyond what I taught them.  I believe every child should have the opportunity to reach their full God given potential, whether home schooled, in private schools, or in public schools.

I am a Christian who believes children are created by God and are a gift to their parents. I am a Conservative who believes government is limited to the functions laid out in our Constitution. I am an Educator who understands the need for mutual respect and a safe learning environment for teachers and students. These are the qualities which I believe equip me to serve on the Cabarrus County School Board and give me a passion for families, children, and education.
